Michigan’s Rural Homeowners Are Reducing Emissions

Homeowners are often surprised to learn that propane is one of the cleanest energy sources for heating their homes in Michigan. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, more than 320,000 rural Michigan homes use propane as their primary heating fuel.

Propane: A Cleaner Choice for Michigan’s Energy Mix

Propane is a low-emission fuel available to Michigan homeowners, especially compared to grid electricity. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, propane emits 139 pounds of CO₂ per million British thermal units (BTUs). In comparison, electricity generated in Michigan produces an estimated 1,550 pounds of CO₂ per million BTUs due to its mix of coal and natural gas.

That means heating a home with electricity can emit 11 times more carbon than heating with propane.

Michigan’s rural propane customers are reducing thousands of tons of carbon emissions every year simply by using propane to heat their homes, cook meals, power water heaters, and run their propane appliances.

Propane Aligns with Michigan’s Clean Energy Goals

As Michigan pushes for cleaner air and a more resilient grid, propane offers a low-emission, off-grid-ready solution. Propane produces fewer nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and particulate matter (PM) than many traditional heating fuels, contributing less to air pollution in residential communities.

Propane remains dependable during storms, doesn’t require expensive infrastructure buildouts, and can be delivered anywhere in the state, giving homeowners peace of mind during harsh Michigan winters.

Nuclear and renewables are part of Michigan’s long-term energy plan, but many of those solutions will take years — even decades — to scale. Propane is already here. It’s clean, reliable, abundant as a domestic fuel, affordable, and easy to integrate into existing home systems.

Looking Ahead

As Michigan works toward its climate and clean air goals, propane remains a critical part of the solution. It helps rural households reduce emissions, supports fuel diversity by reaching areas the grid cannot, and provides consistent, low-carbon energy regardless of the weather.

For Michigan families who care about both their environment and their energy bills, propane makes practical, clean-energy sense. To learn more: Click Here!
