The site is located in Green Charter Township, just north of Big Rapids and approximately one hour from Grand Rapids.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"664\" data-end=\"687\"><strong data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"687\">What Is Gotion?<\/strong><\/h3><p data-start=\"689\" data-end=\"1013\">Gotion is a battery manufacturer primarily focused on lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. Unlike traditional nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries, LFP batteries can withstand harsh conditions. They won\u2019t catch fire even if smashed with an ax or pierced with a nail, avoiding what\u2019s known as a \u201cthermal runaway\u201d event.<\/p><p class=\"x_gmail-p5\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(14, 14, 14)\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\" data-ogsc=\"\">However, LFP batteries tend to have a lower energy density than NMC batteries. They are great for powering heavy-duty trucks, but not so great for powering high-performance sports cars. In May, Gotion announced that its L600 Astroinno battery, which incorporates manganese into the traditional LFP recipe, would be located in Green Charter Township, near Big Rapids.<\/span><\/p><h3 class=\"x_gmail-p5\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(14, 14, 14)\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\" data-ogsc=\"\">Why Michigan?<\/span><\/h3><p class=\"x_gmail-p5\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(14, 14, 14)\"><span class=\"x_gmail-s1\" data-ogsc=\"\">Gotion is planning to manufacture batteries in the US, spurred no doubt by the generous production credits provided by the Inflation Reduction Act. After an extensive search, it settled on a 270-acre parcel of land in Green Charter Township. Upon completion, the factory would produce 150,000 tons of cathode material and 50,000 tons of anode material annually. It would employ more than 2300 workers and cost about $2.3 billion. Gotion is anxious to get going. <\/span>In 2021, it\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">stated that it had a deal with an unnamed \u201cmajor publicly traded US automaker\u201d for 200\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2021\/12\/22\/gotion-signs-200-gwh-lfp-battery-deal-with-major-publicly-traded-us-automaker\/__;!!HXCxUKc!wQlDvXYRYHcPWo94Bb0AT6_GOfhOZEQB4AGAntk-Qlt8vd-fXNbNbxMJiaIW_eRKbTUH4RY_3vGQASi6FQ$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gigawatt-hours (GWh)<\/a> of batteries per year<\/span>.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"2027\"><strong data-start=\"1985\" data-end=\"2027\">State Investment and Political Support<\/strong><\/h3><p data-start=\"2029\" data-end=\"2361\">Meanwhile, the state of Michigan is investing nearly $800 million in grants and tax exemptions from its strategic fund to support the project. Officials say the funding will bring jobs, attract customers, and strengthen economic activity in the region.
