That\u2019s according to a modeling study conducted by a Minnesota-based free-market think tank, which plans to publish its findings by the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"545\" data-end=\"864\">The modeling found that building the necessary turbines, solar panels, storage batteries, and related infrastructure, including wires, poles, and related equipment, would cost Michigan ratepayers a total of <strong data-start=\"722\" data-end=\"738\">$200 billion<\/strong> through 2050.\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">This would also result in\u00a0<strong>61 hours of blackouts per year<\/strong>, due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"871\" data-end=\"942\"><strong data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"942\">Costs Rise Sharply Under 100% Wind, Solar, and Battery Scenario<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"944\" data-end=\"1303\">If the policy moves entirely to wind, solar, and battery storage, the cost estimate rises to <strong data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1053\">$380 billion<\/strong> through 2050. That would average <strong data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1104\">$2,746 a year<\/strong>, or <strong data-start=\"1109\" data-end=\"1125\">$228 a month<\/strong> in added costs for ratepayers, according to the Center of the American Experiment (CAE), which has performed similar studies in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, and other states.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1310\" data-end=\"1354\"><strong data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1354\">\u201cYou Can\u2019t Do Net Zero on the Cheap\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1356\" data-end=\"1608\">\u201cYou can\u2019t do net zero on the cheap,\u201d said <strong data-start=\"1399\" data-end=\"1414\">Jason Hayes<\/strong>, environmental advisor for the Mackinac Center, who worked with CAE on the study. \u201cIt\u2019s the capital expenditure, the utility profits, the taxes, the operation, the maintenance. It all adds up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1937\">Hayes explained that much of the cost stems from <strong data-start=\"1659\" data-end=\"1709\">rebuilding the energy grid almost from scratch<\/strong>. Instead of relying on a few central plants to provide a heavy energy baseload, solar and wind farms would need to be spread out across the state, with the hope that the sun shines or the wind blows somewhere at any given time.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1944\" data-end=\"1998\"><strong data-start=\"1948\" data-end=\"1998\">Overbuilding and Land Use Add to the Challenge<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2000\" data-end=\"2207\">Utilities would need to compensate for this unpredictability by <strong data-start=\"2064\" data-end=\"2104\">overbuilding solar and wind capacity<\/strong>, Hayes said. That would require spreading <strong data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2179\">even more high-voltage lines<\/strong> across large areas of land.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2209\" data-end=\"2369\">Before the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant shut down in 2021, it produced <strong data-start=\"2281\" data-end=\"2348\">more electricity than all of Michigan\u2019s wind and solar combined<\/strong>, according to Hayes.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Bringing nuclear power into the grid to add stability, as the package calls for, is critical for reliability, he said. Today\u2019s battery storage can only handle a finite amount of power.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the battery dies, good luck,\u201d Hayes said. \u201cYou sit in the dark. There\u2019s no escaping it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The business community debated the presumed high price tag of switching from burning fossil fuels in a few select locations to a more dispersed energy generation structure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy severely limiting the resources our state can use to meet our energy needs over just a few years and giving state bureaucrats unprecedented power to shift costs onto energy customers, the legislation could have dire
