The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.misoenergy.org\/2023%20Regional%20Resource%20Assessment%20Report630736.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 Regional Resource Assessment<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.misoenergy.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midcontinent Independent\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.misoenergy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">System Operator<\/a> (MISO) highlights a significant gap between available energy capacity and projected demand in both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.<\/span><\/span><\/p><h3>Supply Shortfalls and the Risk of Blackouts<\/h3><p data-start=\"590\" data-end=\"801\">Even with conservative forecasts, Michigan\u2019s energy supply still falls short of demand. This imbalance, combined with the state\u2019s fixed pricing mechanisms, could lead to energy shortages and potential blackouts.<\/p><p data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"1245\">A key concern is the growing dependence on less predictable energy sources, which often replace more reliable ones. The energy sector continues shifting from controllable, dispatchable resources to weather-dependent, variable generation. This transition is largely driven by the goal of lowering carbon emissions. However, MISO leaders warned during a recent U.S. House Subcommittee hearing that the shift raises serious reliability concerns.<\/p><h3>The Role of Conventional Resources in Grid Stability<\/h3><p>To maintain grid stability, MISO emphasizes the importance of key attributes: rapid startup, flexible output, and sustained, high-volume generation. \u201cHistorically, conventional resources like coal and natural gas have excelled in these areas but are being phased out in favor of renewables that are less reliable and highly dependent on uncontrollable weather conditions,\u201d explains MPGA Executive Director Derek Dalling.<\/p><h3>Retirements Outpace Replacements Across the Region<\/h3><p data-start=\"1797\" data-end=\"2082\">MISO\u2019s findings show that traditional power plants are retiring faster than new sources can replace them. This trend creates growing reliability risks. While Michigan continues to pursue wind and solar projects, these sources still fall short of meeting the state\u2019s full energy demand.<\/p><p data-start=\"2084\" data-end=\"2261\">Looking to neighboring states won\u2019t offer much relief. Many face similar energy constraints. By 2027, every Great Lakes state is expected to deal with its own supply challenges.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"2084\" data-end=\"2261\">Forthcoming Report Calls for Reassessment<\/h3><p data-start=\"2319\" data-end=\"2630\">The Mackinac Center&#8217;s upcoming report will explore these risks in greater depth and assess their impact on Michigan\u2019s energy grid.
